Is Music Piracy Stealing?

I just wanted to add this funny picture here, of course it is not a serious evidence against the people who thinks online file sharing is stealing, but I think it is funny enough to deserve a place in my blog. I think nowadays laws are written to protect strong companies more than ordinary citizens. The reason behind this is obviously the politicians need powerful people behind them to be elected and eventually those people who had helped them, asks for a favour. As Charlie W. Moore noted in his article that there is a law proposal in United States and when it becomes a law even a single unconscious copyright infringement will take you to jail and that is showing music producers, the powerful people are trying every possible way to get “internet pirates” out of their way( I don’t think artist care about it that much because they earn good money from their concerts, advertisements and so..). Is it fair? Well It may be but when u looked at the other side of the picture this requires goverment to watch everything you do on the internet and that is simply a breaking someone’s personal privacy what should not be allowed in any circumstances in my opinion.

So are you arguing that big media companies- Sony etc. are behind the government’s being elected and then the government then gives something back to these big media companies? But in what way do or would the companies benefit by these people being put in jail which is what the author points out would be the result of the latest draconian legislation- the more people in jail, the less people earning money, the less people earning money means less consumers to consume their products- music, films, books (remember that these companies do not just own music production facilities but are major conglomerates these days).
I agree though with your last point about the necessary incursion into people’s freedom in order to carry out such legislation- such incursions should not and can not be tolerated.

Yes I do believe that a goverment cannot be elected without powerful people(who has powerful companies as well) behind them. About the law, I see it a bit different than “tougher laws, more people in jail” theory. I think the reason behind it is that with tougher laws simply more people will be frightened and without anyone to upload them on the internet(because either they will be in jail or frightened to upload) pirated music cannot be easily found so more people going to buy the original.
